  • 7 tips for downsizing success
  • Organizing & downsizing in Victoria...meet Jaclynn
  • Before and after: a small bedroom reorganized

We frequently get calls from individuals who are in the process of downsizing themselves or their aging parents.  The most repeated complaint we hear is
"I feel so overwhelmed!"
Here are 7 tips for success to support you or your
 aging parents through downsizing

  1. Give yourselves the gift of time. You can't rush the process. If your parents are planning to move, start as soon as possible. The process can be exhausting and is better executed in small chunks where memories can be shared before saying goodbye to treasured possessions.
  2. Work on one area at a time. Avoid the chaos of having every room is a state of de-construction.
  3. Don't overvalue. Many possessions, especially furniture, depreciate over time. Help to create realistic expectations about current market value to avoid disappointment.
  4. Encourage donating unwanted items to charity where they will be appreciated.
  5. Understand the limitations of moving to a smaller space. If your parents are moving to a seniors housing community, they will not need much in the way of kitchenware, for example. Reduce collections to what will fit comfortably in the new surroundings.
  6. Use dual purpose furnishings when outfitting a new suite to save space.
  7. Embrace the positives: socializing, comfort, a more manageable environment, improved health and nutrition that seniors benefit from in an environment designed to meet their current needs.

Living in small apartments comes with many challenges!

Before

Before decluttering...

After decluttering...

For many of us living in smaller apartments, keeping on top of clutter is the most difficult thing to do. Let's face it most of us run out of the day before accomplishing all we've set out to do.  We are all extremely busy.  We regularly focus on what we bring into our homes and apartments; groceries, dry-cleaning, books from the library, the glossy program from the show we saw last night, new clothing and shoes. What many of us don't think about is what can we remove from your apartment each time we leave?  Do you have things that need to be returned to a friend?  Do you have clothing hanging in your closet that you aren't wearing anymore?  Do you have a stash of used batteries over-flowing from the peanut butter jar under the sink? Do you have to pole-vault over the recycling to exit your home?  When you live in smaller quarters, taking things you no longer need out of your home on a regular basis is the key to keeping your space clutter-free.  Ask yourself; 'When I leave the house today, will I pass a clothing donation box? Can I use this trip to drop-off those library books?  Will I pass by London Drugs where I can recycle my used batteries?'

if you've answered "yes" to some of the questions above, consider trying to implement this life-style change in your habits. We promise you will feel like you've won the lottery....well, almost.

Happy decluttering!

Content of Presentation:

Moving to a smaller home creates a host of challenges, not the least of which is deciding what will fit in with the new life!  There's no point to moving and storing clothing and household items that have not been unpacked since the previous move.

The message is clear: Deal with clutter before the move.
